Nearly 3 million people across the US have type 1 diabetes. That’s more than twice the population of the 12-county Piedmont Triad region. Just as sobering is the fact that each year more than 15,000 children are diagnosed with type 1 in the US. That’s 40 kids every single day.

To help in the quest to find a cure for type 1 diabetes, the Piedmont Triad Chapter was founded in 1994, and hosted its first events—Walks to Cure Diabetes in both Winston-Salem and Greensboro—in 1995. In addition to the Winston-Salem and Greensboro Walks, the chapter now hosts Walks in High Point, Burlington and Asheboro. Each year, over 4,000 people participate in these four Walks, which together raise over $1 million for important diabetes research.

The Piedmont Triad Chapter also raises money to find a cure for type 1 by hosting an annual Hope Gala and the Blanton Vogler Golf Tournament. The chapter fields a Ride to Cure Diabetes team and also participates in The Fresh Market’s Sidewalk Sale.

The Piedmont Triad Chapter provides support to people who are living with type 1 as well as their families and friends. We host networking events and provide educational, social, and emotional support for people of all ages, and ensure that our local supporters know what is happening in the area of diabetes research internationally.

In fiscal year 2010, the Piedmont Triad Chapter raised over $3 million for research to find a cure.
